West Pittenweem, Pittenweem
An unusual 1904 view of Mid Shore and the West Pier.
The West Pier was built in 1724 by William Aitken after consultation
with William Adam of Kirkcaldy, the father of the famous brothers
John and Robert Adam, who designed many of Britain's best-known
Georgian buildings. The pier was completely rebuilt in 1822 and in
1872 was extended eastward to enclose the West Basin of the harbour,
which was deepened at the same time. The debt for these works was
not cleared by the town until 1930. The tip of the pier was widened
during harbour improvements in 1951
