High Street, Newport
Judging from the style of dress, this picture of the
High Street probably dates from the 1920's. At the bottom of the
street on the right is the Newport Inn, which bears the date 1806,
although sadly now barely legible. It was originally a coaching inn,
built by the first Mr.Berry to take advantage of the gradually
increasing coach and ferry traffic. Although a particularly
attractive feature of the High Street, the trees became increasingly
impracticle as traffic increased, and were finally removed in the
late 1960's to allow road widening. Perhaps the recent arrival of
the boat would account for the huge numbers of pedestrians flocking
up the street. They may well be day-trippers enjoying an outing on
the Fifie.
