High Street, Cowdenbeath
The horses in this c.1907 picture still had two more
years of peace before clanking trams arrived on the scene. At the
far right stands Dick's Co-op building which was built on the site of
the original Cowdenbeath Inn. The spire of the Guthrie Church is
visible just above the fountain. The Guthrie Church replaced the
Free Church, built in Factory Road in 1862 and the first church to be
built in Cowdenbeath(the Beath Kirk was actually outside the burgh
boundaries). Guthrie Church was demolished in 1974 and the site was
renamed Brunton Square.
